ABOUT ME: 
 
My name is Giovanna Leggio and I will be your child’s second grade teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. The students will do straight into the auditorium in the morning and I will pick them up there. Then, they will be dismissed at door number five. School starts at 8:35 and ends at 3:15. I am pleased to have your child in my 2nd grade class. I have a degree in Elementary Education and Spanish, I am from Belleville myself and actually attended School Four. I have a 2 year old daughter. I speak Spanish and Italian. I am looking forward to spending time with you and your family! 
 
Below you will find important information in regards to school, but as always if you have any questions/comments/concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. 

Here is some information to prepare you for your time ahead at school:
I will work hard with your child and make sure I am there for them whenever they need me.
 
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
By 2nd grade, your child is getting the hang of the school routine and is starting to be a more confident student. Second grade is a wonderful year of self-discovery and blossoming independence. Here are the basics of what your 2nd grader should know this school year: 
Homework will be given in Math & ELA daily. Reading Logs are to be done EVERY NIGHT! If you need books please let me know and I will provide you with them. With the exception of Studying and projects homework is rarely given on the weekend. However this is subject to change. 
Folders, Homework Planners, and chrome books should be brought to school daily.
Chrome books should be charged EVERY NIGHT!
 
Reading:
Children in second grade are becoming fluent reader in chapter books. They will start around a DRA 8 and should be reading at a DRA 30 by the end of the year. (The DRA is a standardized reading test that helps us determine what level of reading your child is on.)

They also should be able to:

  • Read and comprehend main ideas.
  • Retell what happened in a story including main ideas, details about characters, setting and events.
  • Self-select just right reading materials.
  • Make connections to their own background knowledge.
  • Read silently.
 
Writing/Fundations/Vocabulary:
Your 2nd grader should be able to:
Write in complete sentences with appropriate punctuation.
  • Learn the spelling of words. 
  • Use capital letters correctly.
  • Use and understand contractions.
  • Write stories with a beginning, middle and end.
  • Be able to do basic research from a non-fiction book.
  • Understand and use first-person and third-person point of view.
  • Edit his or her own writing for spelling and punctuation.
  • Determine the meaning of the new word.
  • Phonetic Awareness
Math:

Kids in second grade math will:

  • Learn about even and odd numbers.
  • Use tally marks to count by five.
  • Read and make graphs.
  • Write numbers in word form.
  • Add two- and three-digit numbers.
  • Subtract two- and three-digit numbers.
  • Know the order of addition and subtraction operations.
  • Know the addition and subtraction fact families.
  • Start learning multiplication and division fact families.
  • Recognize patterns.
  • Round whole numbers to the nearest 10.
  • Know place value to the thousands.
  • Understand money including coins and bills, counting, adding and subtracting money.
  • Be able to measure length, weight and passage of time.
  • Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes.
  • Recognize two-dimensional geometric figures.
  • Solve word problems.
 
Social Studies:
  • Learn about their communities
  • Different regions in their country.
  • Continents
  • Oceans
 
Science:
  • Make predictions
  • Find patterns in nature
  • Learn about the Earth
  • Learn about natural resources.

Below is a copy of the supply list for the 2nd graders. I know a lot of you have brought in a lot of stuff, if you have brought it in already please disregard. It is important that the students have the materials they need so they have all the resources to have a successful year.
